“We’re closed, and we’ll only reopen when it’s no longer compulsory to submit tests to Covid-19. We’re going to lose 15.000 euros a month with this new pandemic situation”. Who says so, speaking to Correio de Lagos, is the businessman Assildo Duarte, owner of the ‘Atlântico’ restaurant, located in Salema, in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, not hiding his indignation with the requirement for people to take tests for the new coronavirus, with a negative result being necessary, to have access to certain places, including catering establishments, at least during this phase of containment until January 9, 2022, determined by the Government.

“Many restaurants end up closing at this time”

“To enter a restaurant, customers already had to show the Covid-19 vaccine certificate, which they did through their mobile phone. So far, it was understandable. Now, they also have to take pandemic tests to eat out…? What happens is that many restaurants end up closing down at this time for lack of conditions to respond to this demand”, observes Assildo Duarte.

In his establishment, this businessman has eight workers, some of them foreigners. “I have an Indian and a Cape Verdean employee. Are they going to do Covid-19 tests on Portuguese clients, or demand from them the document that they haven’t contracted the virus? There are no conditions, and for this reason we have decided to close the restaurant at this time, while keeping our jobs”, he stresses.”What was gained in the summer will be lost in the winter. Nobody knows when this situation of obligatory testing will end”.

He adds: “With no income, I’ll be losing 15,000 euros a month to guarantee salaries, social security payments, electricity and water. What was earned in the summer will be lost in the winter. Nobody knows when this situation of obligatory testing will end, which will happen after 9th January 2022, and so we also don’t know when we will reopen”. Meanwhile, Assildo Duarte is taking the opportunity to carry out expansion work in his restaurant.
