Guests of Airbnb’s local accommodation platform can be equivalent to about a quarter of the population, even in the big cities of Lisbon and Porto. The problems of gentrification tend to become more acute.
If we call tourists visiting Portugal ‘airbnbnbistas‘ via the local Airbnb accommodation platform, it can be seen that there are already two municipalities in the country at risk of having more ‘airbnistas’ than residents: Vila do Bispo and Aljezur, in the Algarve.
In fact, if all Airbnb establishments are occupied to their maximum capacity, then there will be more ‘airbnbistas’ than residents sleeping in these two Algarve municipalities. When the capacity of this local accommodation is divided by the number of inhabitants of Vila do Bispo, the ratio is as high as 113%. In Aljezur, it also exceeds 112%.
