From 3 September 2020 the transitional period will end and anyone who throws cigarette butts into public places will be liable to a fine of between EUR 25 and EUR 250.

From 3 September 2020, the transitional period will end and anyone who throws cigarette butts (Bitucas in Brazil) into public places will be liable to a fine of between EUR 25 and 250.

Law 88/2019 was published in the Diário da República on 3 September 2019 and aims to “reduce the impact of cigarette butts, cigars or other cigarettes on the environment”.

Cafes and restaurants that do not provide ashtrays to their customers can be fined between EUR 250 and EUR 1,500. Public transport operators are obliged to provide ashtrays at all stops and shipping areas to prevent cigarette butts from accumulating on the ground.

ASAE, GNR, PSP and the Waterway Police are responsible for inspection.
